The China Inn, which was a den of mystery located down a flight of stairs on a raffish side street called Harrison Alley, was popular with downtown shoppers and theater-goers in the 1950s.

The 1951 Waterbury City Directory lists the China Inn as the only Chinese Restaurant in Waterbury, so it probably was the first.

During my high school years(48-52),I worked p/t at the Mohican Mkt. Went to many great lunches at the China Inn. Years later, during my college summer vacations, a large group of us use to hang out at Dan's Anchor Grill down the st. When we tired of his Borsht, we'ed meander over to the Inn. It was some of the best Chinese food I've ever tasted. I noted that in a previous comment on the other (cont)

I noted on the other Wtby Memories site that a relative of the owner published a comment last year. One day, while I was in NYC for a few hours , I happened to go to a chinese rest. which reminded me of the CHINA INN--you had to walk down stairs too. While I was there a whole group of ROCKETTES walked in. It was near the Radio City and they were on lnch brk.
